The second time is a charm, too

After a very exciting opening in Vienna on December 3rd the filmmakers of Fatal Promises were looking forward to the film's second screening during the This Human World Film Festival in Vienna on December 11th.

Kat said:"The second time in a city is even more exciting and a little more nerve wracking then the premiere, because you don't know as many people there and you never know how full the theater will be." It turned out that the Fatal Promises Team had nothing to worry about, the second showing at the Vienna's Top Kino was also sold out.

Kat and Anneliese Rohrer also attended the post-screening Q&A and were thrilled about the amount of questions, genuine concern about the Human Trafficking situation in Austria and the overall feedback. Anneliese said:"These Q&As are what it is all about. We get to speak with our audience, engage in dialogue and answer questions pertaining to the country we are in. That is very thrilling and rewarding."

After wrapping up in Vienna the Team is now excited about the upcoming months. "There is still a lot in store for the film and us and we are looking forward to where the journey will take us next." said Kat.

Please, stay tuned for upcoming screening events, festivals and venues. If you would like to see Fatal Promises in your town please visit our website and request a screening: www.fatalpromises.com

What's next ???

After a very busy six months the Fatal Promises team is looking forward to enjoying a few weeks of family time and rest during the Holidays. However as usual they are already thinking ahead and moving forward. The year of 2010 will bring a wide variety of chances to see the film in various different countries, multiple film festivals and a long list of events.

There are several festivals which will feature the film and which we are hoping to travel to. We are also talking to various theaters, one destination on our list will be Cyprus, where we have been given the wonderful opportunity to screen at the famous Acropole Cinemas in Nicosia. This stop on our tour would mean a great deal to us, since Cyprus is such a big hub and transit country for Human Trafficking.

We are also in talks with several elite universities in the US, which have requested the film. So, hopefully by the beginning of 2010 we will have a concrete schedule with dates and locations which we will then post on our website and send out in our newsletter.

One thing is for sure 2010 already looks to be a very exciting year with new, wonderful opportunities to show Fatal Promises but to also do outreach for this ever growing crime of Human Trafficking.

Political News - Tough laws, weak enforcement

The New York Times recently drew attention to the fact that there only has been one conviction and that very few people have been prosecuted since New York State finally passed an anti-human-trafficking law in 2007. At the moment only four cases are pending in New York City. The law, however, has tough provisions for sex or labor trafficking.

On the federal level there have been 196 convictions in cases against 419 people since 2000 when a law was passed with life prison penalties. To contrast these numbers: Up to 17.000 people are being trafficked into the US each year for forced labor and sex.

Prosecutors blame the discrapency on a lack of training: „Police officers do not recognize signs of exploitation and do not ask the right questions at an opportunate time. Eager to move a case along, the police may arrest someone for promoting prostitution rather than stiffer trafficking charges. With evidence growing stale, it can be hard to upgrade charges later on.“

The article provoked a response from John Feinblatt, the criminal justice coordinator in Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s office_“The article highlights the limits of legislation — and the need for more effective enforcement. In New York City we are attacking the problem by enlisting everyone who may be able to intervene. For instance, we are training workers at our Family Justice Centers, which support victims of domestic violence, to identify possible victims of trafficking. We are enlisting other service providers, as well as law enforcement personnel, by creating a comprehensive resource directory.

We are involving the public through a new ad campaign that will raise awareness about trafficking. And perhaps most important, we are asking judges to use their leverage in the sentencing process to ensure that more tragically exploited victims are provided with the critically important support services they need. We recognize that there is still much to do in the fight against human trafficking, and reading your heartbreaking report only hardens our resolve. "
